The community mourns the loss of a popular local fitness instructor who allegedly drowned while on vacation in Maui, Hawaii on January 19.

Kristi Rains, 63, has taught several classes including zumba, step aerobics, silver sneakers and more at Anytime Fitness at 3802 S. 113th W. Avenue for over 10 years.

Rains and her husband Tom left for Hawaii on January 17 and Anytime Fitness director Shaun Fisher said Tom had just returned home on January 23.

“She had a knack for making people feel relevant. She knew how to talk to anyone, whether it was a bad situation or a stressful one, ”Fisher said. “His laughter and his personality were contagious. That’s why so many people cared about her.

Anytime Fitness Manager / Instructor Susan Bennett said Rains was a member of the gym before also becoming an instructor and the students in her classes left five cards with many signatures and wishes at the gym.

“She’s always been enthusiastic about exercise and health… she put hours of practice into her classes,” Bennett said. “She was probably one of the most caring people…

Rains would also have liked to dance and travel with her husband. Bennett said it was their second trip to Hawaii and that they were planning a trip to Europe.
