DETROIT – The U.S. Marines put model Kate Upton to the test Tuesday during a training session in Detroit to promote the city’s upcoming Navy Week celebration.
Upton struggled a bit at the end, but was able to complete the workout routine which included a series of aerobic and running exercises under the watchful eye of her fiancé, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander. Upton joined several other wives of Tigers players and other important people during the session at the Wayne State University sports complex led by Gunnery Sgt. Sara Pacheco, Marine Corps Fitness Instructor.
“It was (a) very hard workout,” Upton said after the workout, which she concluded by collapsing on the grass in an exhausted embrace with another workout warrior. âI knew it was going to be tough. The Marines are very tough.
Verlander, a former American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner as the league’s top pitcher, later said he was proud of Upton for his efforts.
âI think it’s easy to show your support with words. I think going out there and doing this training session, I think, really shows how much they support (the military), âVerlander said. He is the founder of the Wins for Warriors charity which supports military personnel and their families.
Upton, a world-famous model who has appeared three times on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, was on hand to promote Navy Week, which runs September 6-10, and is designed to provide the public a better understanding of the Corps and its mission and the chance to connect with hundreds of Marines.
