Swindon Fitness Instructor Success With Online Classes During Lockdown

LOCKDOWN spilled blood for a fitness instructor in Swindon, who started their own online workout classes.

Annie Ruggiero started Active with Annie at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and was amazed at the positive response.

The 21-year-old said: “I’ve been teaching for a few years now at various gyms around Swindon.

“When the lockdown hit, I had only been working out at some gyms for a year so I didn’t get time off from them. So I was wondering what I could do and that’s where my idea to do online classes came from.

“At first I charged £ 1 per person, it was just my friends at first, but it grew from there and it’s now £ 2 per class. It’s a really nice group and it allows us to socialize a bit.

Annie only teaches classes at Nuffield Health Swindon Fitness and Wellbeing Gym as other Swindon gyms have not yet reinstated classes.

His group went from 10 to 25 people per class.

Annie says the future of fitness may change online once the crisis is over.

She said: “It’s a lot faster for people than having to go to the gym, take a shower and come home or go to work.

“I want to continue now for the foreseeable future. I wondered why this had not been done on a larger scale before. It’s the convenience that is good, it’s obvious, it fits much more easily into people’s day.

“Everything is done in the comfort of your own home, you don’t have to drive anywhere, you can stop and start whenever you want – it’s great”

Annie explained that it has helped clients feel more comfortable as they can turn off their cameras and don’t feel as embarrassed as they could at the gym.

She says it has also helped people’s mental health thanks to the lockdown.

“I think I helped a lot of people during the pandemic because it gave them something to do,” Annie said.

“Mental health has been a key issue since the coronavirus hit and everyone knows fitness helps with that, so more people are trying to exercise more.

“It gave people a chance to feel good about something, like they had accomplished something. They felt better, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Annie runs various classes throughout the week, including HIIT workouts, legs, butt and sit ups, and aerobic dance.
